A blueprint for digital signage success

Use the words digital signage and architecture in the same sentence and the assumption is you’re referring to the technical wizardry that powers the on‑screen content. Actually, in this instance I’m talking about architecture in the visual sense and it’s a subject that I’m pleased to say is getting more and more airtime in areas that would have once upon a time never have put the two together.

Though we’ve been working in digital signage for 12 years or so, it’s still an emerging technology as far as the wider world’s concerned and as such there was a tendency for specifiers to keep it at arm’s length. In recent times, however, there seems to have been a realisation that there’s more to digital signage than ‘hanging screens’ and architects are actively seeking our advice at a much earlier stage in the engagement process.

As a case in point, we were recently called upon to get involved with the RSC’s £1.28m transformation of Shakespeare’s theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon. It goes without saying that aesthetics and respect for the existing environment were crucial considerations for this project. From the depth of the units and style of casing, through to bracket design and cable management, every detail needed to fit in with the architectural style of the building. This focus on the minutiae illustrates an increasing necessity for us to work alongside architects on any design and build where digital signage plays a part and especially on installations in sensitive surroundings, like the RSC deployment.

By consulting a specialist from the start, construction and design teams can be confident that they’ve covered off all that needs to be considered when embarking on any digital signage project. Aside from the aesthetics, an expert can add value by advising on the strategic location of screens in order to maximise the impact and performance of the complete solution, as well as ongoing practicalities like maintenance and access issues. Indeed, there’s more to digital signage than meets the eye. Our online eGuide gives you a detailed overview of some of the factors to take into account from the outset, but certainly from an architect’s perspective collaboration is key. By proactively bringing technical expertise and an all important visual appreciation to the table, together we can create a blueprint for digital signage success in the built environment.
